It is also in 1995 that the name was changed from Krakow-Balice Airport to Krakow John Paul II International Airport in honor of Pope John Paull II who served as Bishop of Krakow from 1963 till he was elected as pope in 1978. Further modernization of the airport was undertaken in 2002. A domestic terminal was opened in 2007.
